Principal's Welcome

Fáilte go suíomh idirlíon Scoil Mhuire agus Íde. Scoil Mhuire agus Íde is a Voluntary Catholic Co-educational School. It is unique as a school in that it was built by the community and it has continued to grow with the community over the years. Scoil Mhuire agus Íde is a provider of high quality education to students from Newcastle West and its surrounding area.

Our mission statement says,we want our school to be not only a ‘centre of academic excellence but a caring community where personal faith is nurtured.’

In SMI we achieve excellence and success together. We want every student to achieve their success. While we continuously strive for and achieve academic excellence, we also recognise that there is a lot more to success than just outstanding academic achievement. We believe in SMI that in today's complex world students need both the knowledge and skills to succeed and also a sense of their humanity, the ability to respect, to be resilient, to empathise and to be caring individuals.

Our website will give you general information on our school. It will give you a taste of our wide ranging curriculum, inform you of our wonderful Transition Year and LCVP Programmes, our Student Council and Student Voice and the vast support available to our students through our Wellbeing and Guidance programmes. Our website will also give you an overview of the subjects on offer at Senior Cycle, inform you of Digital Learning in our school and the vast range of sports and extracurricular activities on offer in SMI.

Scoil Mhuire agus Íde was built in partnership with the local community and building strong links with this community is a key feature of our school. We have a newly established Parents Council to further enhance this partnership.

Our school is greatly assisted by our Board of Management and by the Board of Trustees who are unwavering in their support of the school.

We are very proud of our Autism Classroom or Muire Building as we like to call it because in SMI we believe in inclusion and education and opportunity for all.

Together with Deputy Principals Ms Joan Cahill and Mr Colin O’ Mahoney, I am honoured to be leading the school forward building on the tremendous achievements of its past while helping to navigate its unfolding and exciting future. I am privileged to work with very talented staff who in their enthusiasm and commitment give their very best to the students of our school.

If you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact us.

Le gach dea-ghui,
Michelle Thompson
